Taking care of your skin is important, but with so many skin care myths floating around, it can be hard to know what’s true and what’s false.
At Juniper Dermatology, we care about your health and wellbeing, which is why we strive to offer compassionate, and comprehensive dermatological care. When it comes to your skincare, it’s important to know the truth. Here are five common skin care myths that you need to stop believing:
Myth #1: You don’t need to wear sunscreen if it’s cloudy.
This is incredibly false! UV rays are present even on cloudy or cool days. In fact, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can pass through clouds. Any exposure to these UV rays can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer, regardless of whether you burn or not. UV rays can also cause premature aging and other skin problems, so it’s important to wear sunscreen every day to protect your skin (and health)!
We recommend that you look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher. In addition to applying sunscreen before going out, make sure to reapply it every two hours if you’re spending time outside! The effects of sunscreen can wear out over time, so it’s vital that you reapply to continue protecting your skin throughout the day!
Myth #2: You should exfoliate your skin every day.
This is another big no! Over-exfoliating can damage your skin and cause irritation. When you over-exfoliate, your skin can become irritated and red, and it can disrupt your skin’s protective barrier. Instead of exfoliating every day, aim to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week, and be sure to use a gentle exfoliant or chemical exfoliant, such as alpha or beta hydroxy acids.
Myth #3: You can get rid of wrinkles with a cream.
While some creams may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles temporarily, they cannot get rid of them completely. While some anti-aging creams may contain ingredients that can help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping and hydrating the skin, they do not actually reverse the aging process or eliminate wrinkles altogether. Wrinkles are caused by a variety of factors, which include genetics, sun damage, and your body’s natural aging process. Wrinkles are a natural part of aging and can only be treated with cosmetic procedures.
It’s also important to note that the best way to prevent wrinkles is to protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and avoiding prolonged exposure to UV rays. A healthy diet and lifestyle, including regular exercise and sleeping for 7-9 hours each night, can also help support healthy skin and slow down the aging process.
Myth #4: You should always wash your face with hot water.
Hot water is damaging to your skin for a few different reasons. Constantly washing your face with hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, which may lead to dryness, irritation, and even inflammation. This can be especially problematic if you already suffer from dry or sensitive skin, but it also affects people with oily skin.
Instead of hot water, we recommend that you use lukewarm water to wash your face and avoid prolonged exposure to hot water in showers or baths. This can help to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, while avoiding the potential damage caused by hot water.
Myth #5: The more expensive the skincare product, the better it is.
The price of skincare products is not always an indicator of its quality or effectiveness. In fact, some expensive products may contain unnecessary or even harmful ingredients, while some less expensive products may be just as effective or even better for your skin.
Instead of focusing on the price of a product, we recommend that you look at the ingredients and formula of a product to determine if it’s right for your skin. Look for skincare products that contain high-quality, dermatologist-recommended ingredients that have been shown to be effective for your specific skin concerns. A few key ingredients that you should look for are:
- Retinoids: Retinoids are a form of Vitamin A and are commonly used in skincare products due to their ability to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne. Retinoids may be available in prescription-strength or over-the-counter formulations.
- Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help protect the skin from damage caused by UV radiation and environmental pollutants. It can also improve skin tone, brighten the complexion, and reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
- Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that can help hydrate and plump the skin. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an effective ingredient in moisturizers and serums.
- Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids: Alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs) are chemical exfoliants that can help improve the texture of the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and unclog pores. AHAs, such as glycolic acid, are water-soluble and work on the surface of the skin, while BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are oil-soluble and work on the surface of the skin and inside pores.
- Niacinamide: Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 and has been shown to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce hyperpigmentation, and increase skin hydration. It may also have anti-inflammatory properties, making it a good option for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin.
It’s also important to avoid products that contain potentially harmful ingredients, such as fragrances, alcohol, or harsh surfactants. Of course, everyone’s skin is unique and the ingredients you prefer may depend on your skin type, sensitivities, and preferences, so it’s always a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional before using any new skincare product.
